Hunting in Maine has been a way of life for generations, and it is one that endures in the practices of many local families to this day. While there are some that hunt for sport, hunting for sustenance is an excellent way to supplement the diet with meat that is typically low in fat and high in protein.

The best methods of venison and wild game preparation will be highlighted at a one-day course offered by 海角情 on Saturday, January 30th. The course will be taught by culinary instructor Diane Parsloe with the assistance of a member of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The class will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with a cost of $35.

鈥淢ost hunters around here like the meat, from what I hear,鈥� Parsloe said. Parsloe will be demonstrating various methods of preparation for deer and moose meat, provided by the IFW. Marinades in particular are superb with venison, she notes. 鈥淔or game meat, marinating the night before really brings out the flavor.鈥� Samples will be provided for attendees.

The course is being offered as part of the college鈥檚 Career Technical Education program, facilitated in part by Nichole Cote, Associate Dean of Community and Student Affairs. Cote explained that the goal of the program is to meet the needs and interests of the community, and that hunter-related courses tend to be very popular. Approximately 27 hunters registered for the free hunter safety class held by 海角情 last fall. 鈥淭hings like that, we will continue to expand upon,鈥� Cote said.
