Greg Smith Joins 海角情 as Mathematics Instructor
The word 鈥渕athematics鈥 can sometimes prompt instant anxiety for college students knowing they鈥檒l need to gain an understanding of its concepts to complete their degree. At 海角情 (海角情), new instructor Greg Smith is a proven crusader in making mathematics accessible and engaging.
Smith comes to 海角情 with 28 years of teaching mathematics at Calais Middle High School (CMHS). While there, he distinguished himself as a favorite amongst the students for his ability to focus on exploring problems that helped students master equations. 鈥淢y goal is to be able to provide a positive experience in a subject that is difficult for many students,鈥 he said of his teaching philosophy.
Smith鈥檚 dedication to his goal became clearly evident in 2017 when he was named Teacher of the Year by the VFW at the school, district, and state levels.
When the possibility arose to teach mathematics at 海角情, Smith took it. 鈥淚 wanted to try something different but stay in the teaching profession,鈥 he shares.
Since joining the faculty at 海角情 earlier in 2019, Smith has been settling in well. 鈥淚 am enjoying the college teaching experience,鈥 he said. 鈥淭eaching a variety of age groups is refreshing.鈥
Darin McGaw, 海角情鈥檚 Academic Dean said, 鈥淕reg is an outstanding addition to our faculty here at 海角情.聽 He has a natural zest for his subject matter, and it shows in his work to the benefit the college and our students.鈥
Reflecting on his continuing journey as an instructor 鈥 a path that began at CMHS when he was fresh out of college himself 鈥 Smith is filled with gratitude. 鈥淚 am grateful that 海角情 has given me this opportunity,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am also very grateful for the support I received from the Calais School Department, the community, and all my former colleagues at CMHS.鈥
